Esport Canada & Esports Nations Cup Open Canadian Counter-Strike Qualifier

Canadian Counter-Strike players now have the opportunity to represent the country on the international stage, as registration has opened for the Esports Nations Cup (ENC) 2026 Canadian Qualifier.

Unlike many of the other titles featured at the Esports Nations Cup, where the national esports body—in Canada’s case, Esport Canada—selects players and coaching staff directly, Counter-Strike will use an open qualifier. Canadian players must instead form their own rosters and compete for a place in the North American Regional Qualifier, taking place July 17–19.

The winner of the Canadian qualifier will advance to the North American Regional Qualifier, where they will face teams from the United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Puerto Rico. The top three teams will qualify for the Esports Nations Cup, featuring 24 national teams competing in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 10–15 for a $1.32 million USD prize pool.

Registration is limited to
32 teams, with 7 rosters already signed up at the time of writing.

The most notable entry is a lineup competing under the name “Team Canada”, consisting of:

Canada Damian “daps” Steele

Canada Justin  “FaNg” Coakley

Canada Adam “freshie” Paterson

Canada Jadan “HexT” Postma

Canada Colby “Walco“ Walsh

Currently, daps is registered as a player on the roster. However, he confirmed to ThirdSite that he does not intend to play and will instead serve as the team’s coach. The final roster has yet to be decided, as the team is still working to identify five players who can commit to both the Canadian National Qualifier and, if successful, the North American Regional Qualifier.

The coaching staff will also include SEMPHIS as assistant coach and Frøg as the team’s analyst.

NAF and Calemity are currently registered as substitutes. According to daps, NAF has not yet decided whether he will be available to compete and is therefore listed as a substitute for the time being.

A notable absentee is Twistzz, who is expected to be unavailable due to FaZe competing in the XSE Pro League in Guangzhou, China, during the same period.

The qualifier is scheduled to begin on Thursday, July 9 at 2:00 p.m. EDT, an unusual weekday afternoon start that could make participation difficult for some players. When asked about the timing, Esport Canada told ThirdSite that the schedule was determined by the ENC organizers and that it had no input into the scheduling.

Human Rights & Regional Security

The Esports Nations Cup is organized by the Esports Foundation (EF), which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Like other major sporting and esports events hosted in the country, the tournament has drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which argue these events are part of a broader strategy of sportswashing, using high-profile sporting events to improve Saudi Arabia’s international image despite ongoing concerns over its human rights record, including the treatment of LGBTQ+ people, women, and other minority groups.

The event also comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Last month, another tournament organized by the Esports Foundation, the Esports World Cup, was relocated from Riyadh to Paris following security concerns in the region. Richard Lewis reported that organizers have established a group to develop contingency plans for the Esports Nations Cup should conditions require changes to the event.
