The University of British Columbia (UBC) and Simon Fraser University (SFU) have announced the “Coast to Cloud” LAN, an open Counter-Strike 2 LAN taking place in the Vancouver metro area.
First reported by College Counter, the event will feature online qualifiers before culminating in a four-team, in-person playoff bracket at SFU’s Burnaby campus. The prize pool is set at $250 with no entry fee.
The initiative has been led by UBC Esports CS2 department head David “SoulMaster” Newn and SFU CS2 director Yerkin “LanceWWS” Boranbayev. The two organizers are personally funding the initial prize pool and opted to remove an entry fee in order to maximize participation.
LAN CS2 opportunities in the Westen Canada have been limited in recent years, making Coast to Cloud a notable addition to the West Coast calendar.
Speaking to College Counter, “SoulMaster” explained, “There used to be a fairly active LAN scene pre-COVID, but COVID hit the Metro Vancouver Counter-Strike scene pretty hard. And that basically led to this drought of opportunities for players looking to play in these live events again.”
Speaking to College Counter, “LanceWWS” added, “If this tournament succeeds, it could open the door for larger prize pools, more university collabs, and more frequent LAN events in the region.”
